Nashville Flood Relief Mission Trip

We just announced yesterday an exciting new opportunity to serve.  FBC Athens is headed to Nashville in two weeks to help repair homes that were devastated by the recent flood. We are taking a group of students and adults to hang sheetrock, clean and remove damaged items, and find other ways of serving.

We will be staying at Longhollow Baptist Church in Hendersonville, Tennessee.  They have space for us to sleep, a kitchen, and showers.

Here are the details:

Leave: Sunday morning May 30
Return: Friday evening June 4
Work Days: May 31-June 3
Cost: $100 plus money for meals on the way to/from Nashville

If you are interested in being a part of this team, see Steve Akin or Chris Stapper this week.  We need a group of 30-40 people and the trip will fill up quickly.

Help For Haiti Update

It has been over two months since a massive earthquake decimated much of Port Au Prince, Haiti.  I wanted to share an update on the way that you fine folks helped those affected by the earthquake.  On January 13, we started selling cookies to collect money, and on January 17 we began to sell Help Haiti TShirts.  Within 14 days we had sold over 150 cookies, and all of the 144 shirts that we had ordered.  In addition to these two things, other people donated money to the Haiti Relief efforts.

The Final Total of all the money collected is: $1908.82.  That’s incredible!  This week, we sent that money to Compassion International’s Haiti Earthquake Response Fund.  According to their site, a donation of $500 provides “critical life items like temporary shelter, blankets and clothing for 10 families” and a donation of $1500 “helps to rebuild a home.”  That means that by purchasing a cookie and a T-shirt, you were a part of rebuilding a home and providing critical life items to 10 families.  There is still a great need in Haiti, but there are 10 families who are being taken care of because of your generosity.

Thank you for helping.
